Science Fiction is distinguished from Speculative Fiction by the degree that Science Fiction represents real scientific understanding, while Speculative Fiction can be more fanciful.

For example, the teleportation device in Star Trek, or the light-sword in Star Wars, are not based on scientific concepts. They represent magical abilities and items cloaked in futuristic trappings.
